LBN 640

This image is centered upon a dim molecular cloud located in the constellation of Perseus at a declination of +54 degrees. Like LBN 437, a star cluster (UBC 188) is buried within the head of the cloud and is creating a reflection nebula.

The starless mouseover makes it easier to see the characteristics of this cloud. A strong HII component, seen in this LRGB image, seems to radiate from the right of the head of the cloud. The cloud in total seems to take on a horseshoe shape, such that a faint head is seen on the opposite side of the HII source.

This object came to my attention when it was written up in the October 2019 Sky & Telescope magazine (p 59). I can't believe that this nebula was presented in the magazine as an eyepiece object. I have never tried to see this object through the eyepiece but I am guessing that it would be very dim.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
